Toilet paper is not commonly used in Algeria. While there is a small population that uses toilet paper, especially if they are in a public place, most Algerians believe that it is unnecessary and some even believe it is un-Islamic.

What types of toilets are common in Algeria?

There are three types of toilets commonly found in Algeria: the pour-flush, the pit latrine, and the ventilated improved pit latrine.

The pour-flush toilet is the most common type of toilet in Algeria. It consists of a bowl that is flushed with water from a tank or cistern. The bowl is connected to a sewer system.

The pit latrine is the second most common type of toilet in Algeria. It consists of a hole in the ground that is lined with a concrete or plastic slab. A superstructure may be built over the pit to provide privacy.

The third most common type of toilet in Algeria is the ventilated improved pit latrine. This type of toilet is similar to an outhouse, and has a hole in the ground that is used as a toilet. The main difference from an outhouse is that the ventilated improved pit latrine has a ventilation pipe that helps to keep the area around the hole from smelling bad.

What about Travelers? How should tourists deal with it?

If you’re looking for an amazing, off-the-beaten-path travel destination, Algeria is the perfect place for you. This North African country has a rich culture, delicious food, beautiful scenery, and friendly locals…but it might be difficult to find toilet paper. If TP is important to you, it’s definitely recommended to pack some before your trip!

Conclusion

Algeria is a great place to travel to for its food, culture, and history…but it is not a “toilet paper-friendly” country. Algerians who do use toilet paper typically use it for drying their hands after washing them or some even use toilet paper to wipe their feet before entering a prayer room or to clean their glasses…but don’t expect to find it in most cases. There are many things to see and do in this North African country but you might want to consider packing your own TP before you travel there!
