The answer is definitely, yes. In fact, the average Australian uses about 88 rolls of toilet paper per year; a figure that can rival almost any other nation on Earth. So whether you’re looking to relax on the beach, explore the great Outback, or get up close and personal with some of the world’s most exotic animals, Australia is a fabulous travel destination and an extraordinarily toilet paper-friendly country.

What types of toilets are common in Australia?

The Western-style flush toilet is the most common type of toilet found in Australian homes. The dual flush toilet is also becoming increasingly popular though (and around the rest of the industrialized world) as it is more water efficient than the standard flush toilet. It reduces water usage by offering users two buttons or levers – one for a partial flush (usually 3-4 litres) and one for a full flush (usually 9-12 litres) reserved for full-on poops (keeping it real).

In addition, the composting toilet is becoming an ever more common alternative to the standard flush toilet, particularly among environmentally conscious Australians. A composting toilet works by breaking down human waste into compost, which can then be used as fertilizer for plants, thus reducing your water usage, reducing the cost of your sewage and fertilizing bills, and helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

What about Travelers? How should tourists deal with it?

Travelers from the United States will certainly feel right at home in the vast majority of Australian bathrooms. Australians are big-time users of toilet paper and use Western-style flush toilets, almost universally.

Conclusion

There are few places on earth as varied and beautiful as Australia. From its stunning beaches and rugged Outback, to its friendly locals and unique culture, there is something for everyone Down Under…and there is certainly a large supply of toilet paper available. If you’re planning a trip to Australia, you have absolutely nothing to worry about, as it is truly one of the most toilet paper-crazy cultures on the entire globe!
