When it comes to Austria, the good news is that the restrooms are generally clean and well-stocked with toilet paper. Austria itself has a long and rich history, dating back to the early Middle Ages. In fact, it was once a powerful empire, but it has since been reduced to a relatively small republic. Nevertheless, Austria remains an important cultural center, with rich historical significance.

What types of toilets are common in Austria?

The Western-style flush toilet is the most common type of toilet used in Austria, although they work a little differently than they do in the United States. Most Austrians use what is called a “washout toilet”, informally called a “German toilet” (and also sometimes known as a “shelf toilet”).

Washout toilets are much more water efficient and perhaps most importantly have a “shelf” in the toilet bowl above the water surface to hold the feces before flushing…so they can be inspected for “health reasons”. That’s right…so you can look at your poop. The German terms for this type of toilet are Flachspüler and Hochspüler…isn’t that interesting?

What about Travelers? How should tourists deal with it?

Travelers from the United States will certainly feel right at home in the vast majority of Austrian bathrooms. Austrians largely stock their restrooms with toilet paper and use flush toilets…although, in Austria you may even get the added pleasure of being able to observe your feces before flushing!

Conclusion

Austria is a land of great history and culture. It’s a place where you can find both peace and excitement…and it’s a place where you will almost certainly have access to toilet paper (and the opportunity to observe your feces before flushing! Woo hoo!).

So pack your bags, book your ticket, and get ready for an amazing adventure in Austria!
